Thunnus alalunga

The word “tombo” means “dragonfly” and whimsically describes the very long pectoral fins that the fish have. It comes from the clean, tropical waters off the coast of Hawaii and is a soft, pink tuna that is a nice contrast to albacore from the north pacific. Both are caught in sustainable ways and we encourage you to do a side by side taste test. Whether preparing for sashimi or lightly searing, you absolutely cannot go wrong with this flavorful tuna!

Sustainably Sourced

Albacore tuna is found in many oceans around the world. Albacore in the Pacific Ocean is reasonably abundant and healthy, as compared to less abundant populations in the North Atlantic. Albacore reproduce at an early age of 2-5 years old, have a maximum age of 10 years, and have many young making them more resistant to fishing pressure.

Most tuna is caught with longlines. These are lines strung with hundreds of hooks that extend a great distance behind the boat. This method is not selective for target species and can result in the catch of large quantities of non-targeted species (bycatch), including threatened or endangered species such as sea turtles, sharks and seabirds. However strict regulations on bycatch in the Hawaiian longline fishery make this species a good alternative to longline caught albacore in other areas outside of Hawaii.
