Coryphaena hippurus

Although not related to dolphins, Mahi Mahi swim next to boats in similar fashion to dolphins, which is why it was originally marketed under the name "Dolphin Fish." The name caused widespread consumer concern and confusion, so the "Dolphin Fish" was renamed Mahi Mahi and consumer acceptance and commercial sales began to increase.

Mahi Mahi is one of the fastest swimming fish in the ocean, traveling most often on its own. While many mahi mahi are caught in unmanaged longline fisheries that result in high levels of bycatch, i love blue sea only sells mahi mahi that have been caught on low-impact hand lines. Perfect for your next backyard BBQ!

Sustainably Sourced

Mahi Mahi are found throughout the world’s oceans. Mahi reach maturity at a young age (4-5 months) and have a relatively short lifespan (2-5 years). These characteristics make Mahi Mahi more resilient to fishing pressure. Despite these characteristics it is unknown if mahi populations in the Pacific are healthy, and populations in the Pacific are currently not under any specific management measures causing some concern.

I Love Blue Sea’s mahi mahi is caught using handlines that are trolled through the water. These handlines target individual fish and result in minimal bycatch of species other than mahi. Handlines are also unlikely to cause damage to ocean habitats. Traditional methods used to catch mahi such as longlines and surface nets result in high levels of bycatch and can damage ocean habitats.
